Message from the Archbishop

Dear brethren of Kampala Archdiocese, grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. On the 13th November 2016, the People of God in Kampala Archdiocese officially launched the jubilee Celebrations in memory of the past 50 years since the erection of the Archdiocese on the 30th October 1966. Today, on the 29th October 2017 we join together to celebrate the climax of the Golden Jubilee Year festivities. I heartily congratulate all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Kampala, upon reaching this solemn and historical day. "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24

I welcome our special guest from the Vatican, Rome - His Eminence Fernando Cardinal Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. Together as an Archdiocese we thank you for accepting our invitation. I pay tribute to the Mill Hill Fathers and the Missionaries of Africa, commonly known as the White Fathers. These two missionary congregations worked well in the primary evangelization of the then, Kampala Diocese and Lubaga Diocese respectively. Among the White Fathers, we recall with gratitude, Archbishop Joseph Kiwanuka, as a man of great vision.

I salute in a very special way the first Archbishop of the Archdiocese - His Eminence the late Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga, of happy memory. I salute Cardinal Nsubuga’s successor, His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, my predecessor. Cardinal Nsubuga shaped Kampala Archdiocese as one family of God and Cardinal Wamala protected, developed and completed what his predecessor had started. When I inherited the Archdiocese of Kampala in 2006, I found fertile ground for starting afresh from Christ under the 3 Muneri Christi of sanctifying, teaching and governing. Today we praise and thank God for the good work done by Bishops, Priests, Religious, Catechists and all Lay Faithful.

For Jubilee year 2017, we chose to follow the theme: "Remember, Rejoice and Renew”. My Pastoral letter “Remember, Rejoice and Renew” aimed at helping each one of us to understand the theme and benefit spiritually and pastorally from this sacred year. 1 thank you all Christians for having prayerfully meditated on this theme. We have taken time to remember what God has done for us during these past 50 years. I recognize that many Christians have obtained an increased knowledge about the history of the Archdiocese and meaning of the vibrant events that have taken place in the past. You have rejoiced at the milestone achievements as well as asked for forgiveness for the many times we have failed to be faithful to the Mission of Christ.

As a way of renewal, you have prayed, received sacraments and devotedly made pilgrimages to the Cathedral in your respective deaneries. I thank you all for the laudable jubilee year initiatives in planting trees, organizing health care camps, buying certificates, music festivals and above all for devotedly welcoming the visitation of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in your Parishes. I am indebted to the members of the Jubilee Central Organizing committee, for the good work done in preparing today’s occasion. You have prayed, given time, ideas and finances. I thank you.

Today, as we crown the golden Jubilee Celebrations, I invite you all People of God in the Archdiocese of Kampala, never to lose the grace of remembrance. During his visit to Uganda, Pope Francis told us that while the biggest enemy of remembrance is forgetfulness, the most dangerous one is when we take for granted everything we have received, everything that has been passed down to us. Let us therefore continue to remember and preserve the good things of the past 50 years. Let us preserve the joy of belonging to Christ in the local Church of this Archdiocese. Let us maintain a solid foundation of communion (Can 205) under the succession and leadership of St. Peter (Matt. 16: 18), the adherence to the seven sacraments and abide by a genuine profession of the true faith in Christ.

Lastly, I entrust the past, present and future of the Church in Kampala Archdiocese, to the maternal protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the intercession of the Holy Martyrs of Uganda. May God, who has accompanied us in the past 50 years, continue to be with us and enable us to serve, grow and ever launch in the deep with firm faith, hope and love.

Ad Multos Annos.
